Description
Workshop "Technology-enhanced simulation: (Im)possibilities, challenges and testing simulation technology for skills education and assessment"Introduction & Aims
Students can practice authentic professional situations through simulation technology, whether remotely or not, e.g. in the case of VR or serious games.
A simulation environment or serious game offers a safe learning environment in which actions can be repeated endlessly, different approaches can be experimented with and making mistakes has no consequences for patient safety.
It also provides an opportunity to a standardized learning environment. In addition, simulation technology together with wearables such as motion sensors or smartwatches offer the possibility to provide unbiased, objective and detailed feedback because the learning can be continuously monitored and you are
not dependent on an expert watching.
But with that, these technologies also present challenges for education. Not everything you can learn in practice can be simulated, and not everything you can simulate or measure is relevant to practice. This means that the choice of
(immersive) simulation or wearables for skills training or assessment must be well-considered. This should take into account the goals of education but also the (im)possibilities of the specific technology you want to use.
In this workshop, we aim to elaborate on integrating (immersive) simulation technologies and wearables into one's education. How can I effectively and efficiently use the possibilities of (immersive) simulation technologies and wearables in my education? What do the technical parameters of the simulator or wearable say about the development of a learner's clinical skill?
