Much research on data-informed decision making focuses on teachers. Data can help teachers not only understand how their students are performing, but also why their students may or may not be performing up to expectations. Additionally, teachers no longer work in isolation, but must function collaboratively, in professional learning communities or data teams, to examine, interpret, and map out courses of action based on data. Data literacy—specific knowledge, skills, and dispositions—is essential to enabling teachers to use data effectively. Drawing from papers that address the issue of data literacy to improve student learning in different contexts, this symposium will explore the intersection of how teachers are using data and how they may best be prepared and supported to use data effectively. The papers in this symposium address key issues around teacher data use that continue to resonate in the field from both a theoretical and a practical perspective: influencing factors and effects for data teams, professional teacher judgment for taking action based on data, and sustainability of a data use intervention.
