The overarching theme of this interactive symposium is sustainability of educational interventions. Schools are faced with the challenge of implementing new practices, however many of those initially successful interventions fail to become part of the school’s organizational routines (e.g., Fullan, 2007; Hargreaves & Fink, 2006; Wiltsey Stirman, Kimberly, & Cook, 2012). This symposium will focus on different views and varying definitions of sustainability, and its influencing factors. By means of a systematic literature review and two empirical studies with different operationalizations of the concept of sustainability, we aim to reflect on the current situation regarding sustainability, the complexity around its definitions, and to define similarities and subjects for research. This symposium relates to the conference-strand ‘rethinking roles and relationships within systems’ as it is important to rethink our ideas about how we implement interventions within schools aligned to its organizational structures, for these to become sustainable. Research suggests that this should happen in an early stage of implementation (e.g. Hubers & Poortman, 2018). A relevant question for discussion is therefore: considering the different perspectives on sustainability, how can we organize the implementation of interventions to become a regular part of the schools’ organizational routines?
