The ability to modulate electrical transport properties in materials by an external electric field has attracted much interest. Scaling electronic devices to nanometer dimensions requires new materials as the currently-used materials encounter an insulating regime due to the depletion of carriers. A suitable material should exhibit on-state conductance close to a metal. However, due to the high density of mobile charge in metals, their thickness must be comparable to the screening length for achieving a considerable field effect.
