Climate Adaptation strategies: Green infrastructure examples in the Netherlands and Hawaii

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

The city Enschede faces various climate related issues: heavy rains, groundwater nuisance, and heat stress. Over the years the municipality has been implementing several green infrastructure measures to adapt, such as reintroducing streams, disconnecting rainwater, replanting trees and creating tiny forests, and creating wadis and a storage basin.
The city can do only so much however, as much land or houses are privately owned. There are various financial subsidies available for private home owners, but it remains difficult to convince people to transform their own gardens and houses. Through visible community projects and a wide range of possible examples, the city hopes to enthuse people.
