The ‘Beeldenbrekers’ guest lessons are an initiative of VHTO. These lessons aim to give children a better understanding of careers in science, technology and IT. Although girls and boys are equally talented when it comes to technology and IT, boys are still more likely to choose a technical course of study and career. This is because girls tend to believe, from a young age, that these careers are not for them. Through these guest lessons, VHTO shows all children how enjoyable and important work in engineering and IT can be.On 10 March 2026, Céline Steenge visited De Wegwijzer Primary School in Losser for a VHTO Beeldenbrekers guest lesson, where she spoke to Year 5 and Year 7 pupils about her work as a ‘smart devices researcher’. The children started by drawing what they thought her role as a PhD student at the University of Twente looked like, after which she discussed with the pupils what she actually does.
Afterwards, they designed their own ‘wafers’ together using two colours of paper, scissors, glue and a little flour. A surprisingly good exercise in layering and working neatly. And as Céline told the children: it’s not as easy as it looks!
