Geo citizen science and digital tools with which students can conduct research on environment and climate at NLT

Dataset

Description

Citizen science is the practice of public participation in scientific research. Through the collaboration between citizens and scientists, it generates new knowledge and awareness about the practices and methods of research. As such, it has a great potential for schools, allowing learners to solve real-life problems while using scientific tools. The main goal of this workshop was to show the opportunities for geographic citizen science with the ready-to-use infrastructure and tools, and gather response of teachers and technicians involved in NLT. Several tools and activities were selected for the hands-on activities, which can be easily and successfully used by inexperienced users. Example activities are plot data on charts, select areas and visualize available information, create maps, etc. Following the introduction of the tools, examples of geographic citizen science projects with schools were introduced, both from the Netherlands and from abroad. A group brainstorming session was performed on how to facilitate such activities at schools and how to connect to various NLT modules.
