Ana Maria is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the INECIS project in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Geospatial Information Management (PGM) at ITC.  The INECIS is an NWO funded project (2019-2022) which investigates the informal economies and creative industry strategies relationships, their governance arrangements, and the socio-spatial dynamics derived from such interactions in urban kampongs in Bandung, Indonesia.

Her prior professional and academic experience on various projects related to the exploration of participatory and socio-spatial approaches, and most recently mobile geospatial technologies, to work together with underrepresented communities and other institutional and civic actors in local, urban and regional planning projects. In these projects, she worked together with several communities in Colombia and Germany and with civic collectives in Spain, as well as with diverse institutions such as universities, schools, local governments, UN agencies, architecture studios, and NGOs. In 2018, she obtained her PhD in Geoinformatics from the Institute for Geoinformatics at the University of Münster in Germany. Her PhD was done as part of the ITN- Marie Skłodowska-Curie project “GEO-C” which aimed to investigate and develop strategies and tools for enabling Open Smart Cities. Her topic of research was on the exploration and adaptation of participatory design approaches to ideate digital (geospatial) services with forcibly displaced population to support their (re)settlement in their host city.

Her current research interests are related to the exploration and development of community-oriented participatory strategies and (geospatial) technologies to understand and improve the cities processes related to the promotion of inclusive planning and design of the urban environments. Her more current research approximations on this regard are closely related to the topics of informal economies, as well as migration.
