Christiaan (Chrit) Lemmen is Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Geo-information Management (ITC-PGM) at the faculty of ITC. His research activities are performed in close co-operation with the Land Administration group of Prof. Jaap Zevenbergen. Chrit is one of the editors of the ISO standard on the Land Administration Domain (ISO 19152). This standard includes a specialisation called the Social Tenure Domain Model. In the existing, conventional, land administration systems customary and informal tenure cannot be easily handled. Alternative approaches are needed. The concept of the Social Tenure Domain Model brings this alternative by providing a universal standard for representing ‘people – land’ relationships independent of the level of formality, legality and technical accuracy. This model has been developed together with UN – Habitat and the International Federation of Surveyors.

Chrit is senior geodetic advisor at Kadaster International, the international branch of the Netherlands Cadastre, Land Registry and Mapping Agency. He has been involved developments in cadastre and land management in many countries.

Chrit is director of the FIG International Office of Cadastre and Land Records, OICRF.

He is member of the Advisory Committee for the Social Tenure Domain Model of the Global Land Tool Network GLTN/UN-Habitat.

Christiaan holds an MSc in Geodesy from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands and received a PhD from the same University for his thesis ‘A Domain Model for Land Administration’. He is from 1956.
