Dr. Corné van Elzakker is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geo-Information Processing (GIP). He studied human geography with cartography as main subject at Utrecht University and obtained a PhD-degree from the same university. Corné is ITC's liaison with the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and chairs the ICA Commission on Use and User Issues (www.univie.ac.at/icacomuse/). He is also a member of the ICA Commission on Maps and the Internet.
At ITC he executed and executes a great variety of tasks in the fields of education, research, consulting and management and administration. He is also acting chairman / secretary of the ITC Student Assistance Fund and chairman of the Henk Scholten Award Committee.
At ITC, Corné van Elzakker has always taught aspects of cartographic semiology, map design and thematic cartography and supervised many final projects at different levels as well as MSc and PhD thesis research projects in various course programmes. He introduced the subject 'Basic research skills' in the cartography and geoinformatics programmes. Currently, he is co-coordinating the educational modules Principles of Geographic Information Systems (in the Geoinformatics (GFM) and Land Administration (LA) courses at MSc and Master (M) Degree level), Dissemination and Visualization of Geospatial Data (GFM M), Advanced Topics and Master Skills (GFM M) and Use, Users and Usability (all ITC courses, MSc).
Corné van Elzakker did his PhD research into the use of maps in the exploration of geographical data. His main research interests are in the field of use and user issues in geo-information processing and dissemination, including cartography and geovisualization. Current research spearheads are the usability of geo-mobile applications and the use of base maps for physical planning maps, but the main focus is on the application of methods and techniques of user research and user-centred design in the geo-domain. As a formal activity of the ICA Commission on Use and User Issues Corné is working on The Handbook for User Research in Geo-information.
For ITC, Corné van Elzakker has been involved in many commercial teaching courses within the Netherlands (e.g. for ESRI NL). He has led advisory projects on the cartographic design of a model Web risk map for the Dutch Ministry of Home Affairs and on the standardization, functionality and cartographic design of digital physical planning maps for the Dutch Ministry of Housing. He also has an interest in and experience with advisory services in the field of user-centred (post-)census cartography (Central Statistical Organization, Yemen and Central Bureau of Statistics, the Netherlands).
