Islam Bouzguenda is smart governance academic at the Department of Public Administration at the Technical University of Twente. The common thread joining her research together is an interest in the social dynamics and challenges that accompany innovation associated with Smart cities governance. Dynamics and challenges focused on equity, the digital divide, social sustainability, and, associated regulations by the public sector.

Bouzguenda has held technical, research, and advisory positions, in particular in the GCC region, Spain, and the Netherlands. In these positions, she has served as a PI investigator in research projects, a consultant within private companies, and a broad member of several associations. Her expertise has also been shown and translated into lectureships, and publications.

Before joining the BMS faculty, Bouzguenda was a Researcher at Sultan Qaboos university collecting and analyzing quantitative data through CBC surveys distilled from local communities concerning the development of sustainability measuring tools.

Bouzguenda is a graduate of Sultan Qaboos University (Bsc, 2012), Girona University (MA, 2016), and (Ph.D., 2021). She is a Community of Practice (CoP) Member on Urban Innovation at the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), a Certified Practitioner at the Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand, and worked as a consultant for the Arabian Research Bureau.
