Personal profile
Patrick is a PhD candidate at the University of Twente’s Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), in the Department of Urban Planning and Geo-Information Management (PGM). He is part of the PLUS – People, Land, and Urban Systems group. Patrick holds a B.Sc. in Geography and Urban Planning from Kogi State University (2012) and an M.Sc. in Environmental Management from Nnamdi Azikiwe University (2017), both in Nigeria. From 2015 until 2021, he served as an assistant lecturer at Kogi State University; engaged in notable research projects, and taught and supervised undergraduate students. Also, he was part of different committees, across his Department, Faculty and the University, as well as different consultancy activities, including the World Bank-funded Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).
Expertise
Patrick's expertise lies in urban climatology and big geospatial data analytics, focusing on landscape character analysis for ecological phenomena understanding and support tool development for stakeholder use. He is passionate about Open Science and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance scientific impact and always promoting FAIR data principles and practical application of research findings for stakeholder benefit. His commitment extends to making scientific data accessible and usable for diverse audiences, advocating for landscape characterisation to guide model adoption and scientific outputs' implementation.
Research and Impact
His current research, “Geospatial Simulation of Urban Surface Warming in Major Landscape Characters of Nigeria and Its Implications for Strategic Green Infrastructure Planning” aims to produce a Green Infrastructure-based Planning Support System (GIPSS). This is envisaged to assist urban stakeholders in developing strategies to mitigate urban heat islands (UHIs), thereby improving city liveability. Patrick has identified (confirmed) robust metrics for urban surface temperature modelling across diverse landscape characters (globally), developed actionable dashboards to share his findings and sought to democratize his research further with a broad stakeholder community. His work promises to simplify the approach to solving ecological challenges, particularly UHIs, thereby developing solutions that are more landscape-targeted, accurate, user-friendly, transferable, and actionable.
