Abstract

Localized drug delivery should significantly improve the therapeutic efficacy for treatment of pathological lesions and concurrently reduce toxic exposure to the surrounding healthy tissue. A novel contrast agent, consisting of mono-dispersed gas-filled microcapsules, offers great potential for localized drug release. The destruction threshold and rate of various microcapsules and their dependence on the microcapsule size and shell thickness have been investigated via optical and acoustical measurements. The results presented in this paper will increase understanding of specific physical attributes needed to improve ultrasonically-activated drug delivery particles.
