Abstract

This study presents a comparison between two burned area algorithms. The first one that was developed by Huesca et al. (2008) is based on thresholds determination base on MODIS infrared spectral band and hotspots time series as delivered by NASA. Thresholds were defined based on maximum correlation between the infrared band and hotspot influence area. The second one is the algorithm used in MODIS burned area products (MOD45). The results show the usefulness of the methodology developed by Huesca et al. (2008) related to MOD45 products. In addition, the results show a clear under-estimation of the affected area using MODIS burned area product.
