Abstract
A question Systems Engineers face is how to decide an appropriate modelling effort in the SE process. In the paper we introduce a three-part framework to assist in answering this question, with the goal to reach balanced system designs. The framework bases on two dimensions model scale and model foundation. The second component is a set of heuristics to steer the modelling effort. The third part provides guidelines for model verification and validation.
