Accurate measurement of the kinetic coefficient of friction between a surface and a granular mass

A device has been developed for correct measurement of the kinematic coefficient of friction between a cohesionless granular material and a surface. Particle size may range from 0.5 up to about 9 mm, depending somewhat on the desired accuracy. Sliding velocity of the granules with respect to the surface was varied up to 33 m/s. The accuracy of the magnitude of the friction coefficient is within ±1.5%, whereas the variation of this coefficient, as caused by the sliding velocity, can be obtained with an accuracy of ±0.5%.
