Abstract
Nowadays when there is a lot of data available about movements, it is important not only to be aware of how to collect and store this data but also how to visually represent the information to get insights and “read” the story behind data.
When visualizing origin-destination data, the traditional flow map is the solution most often selected. However, representing space, time, and attribute all at once is not always possible. Therefore, we need to look for other solutions to represent this information.
The combination of several linked graphical representations would be a solution. A Visual Analytics environment could be one of those solutions to represent the information for certain entrepreneurial users, but if we just want to tell the story behind the data and provide interested users the most important information, a dashboard is a better solution. It provides the summary of the represented information in several linked graphical representations.
Despite the advantages of a dashboard, it has some limitations. It usually fits a single screen which hold a limited number of linked graphical representations in a fixed layout. To overcome these limitations, we will introduce dashboard adaptability. This will appear at three levels – information content, user interface, and graphical representations. The concept of an adaptable dashboard is illustrated by case studies on maritime migration and airport connectivity.
