Abstract
Batteries are a key technology in electric vehicles (EVs), microgrids, smartphones, laptops, etc. A battery management system (BMS) is needed in order to ensure the safety and reliability of these batteries and systems. This paper starts with a concise review of battery management systems and their main tasks. Furthermore, options for multifunctional battery electronics that integrate two or more tasks together are subsequently presented. In order to evaluate the feasibility of balancing capability of reconfigurable batteries as multifunctional battery electronics, a simulation of two existing works on reconfigurable battery packs with inversion capability is done in MATLAB to compare these two options and show their application perspective.
