Abstract
The aim of the present study was to compare the morphological pattern and the quantitative parameters of tyrosine hydroxylase- (TH)-containing neurons of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and substantia nigra (SN) in young (3-months old) and senescent (24-28 months old) male Wistar rats. The reaction product is homogeneous and fills the entire perikaryon and often extends in the dendrites and axons of the neurons. The borders of VTA and SN are sharply outlined. In VTA the TH-positive neurons are regularly distributed, while in SN they are concentrated in pars compacta and in pars lateralis.
