Abstract

The future orientation of technological innovation requires epistemological diversity in the imagining of a range of possibilities, not the least in light of an increasingly turbulent and uncertain future. However, technical higher education often discounts the imagination in favour of more recognizable forms of expertise. In response we call for pedagogical practices in which the imagination is nourished yet grounded, where criticality and generativity are combined, and where scientific rigour is in service of possibility. We outline such directions by suggesting seven principles based on our teaching experiences.
