    Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the work which was carried out within the framework of the COST11bis LAN project by the subgroup on Network Interconnection. A technique of successive decomposition of a common users' activity is used to illustrate the problems of network interconnection. The criteria derived from this approach offer a structuring principle which is used to develop an architectural model that embeds heterogeneous subnetworks into a global network.
