Abstract

The introduction of emergent technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), is offering new solutions for the railway's environment for both reducing the cost of training programmes and improving and supporting maintenance operations. Based on some railway applications’ reflections, the paper analyses how the application of extended (XR) and mixed reality (MR) solutions could bring substantial benefits to companies in improving the actual traditional training programmes and in supporting operators during maintenance tasks. Firstly, the chapter offers a short overview of the main features of XR and MR. Secondly, it reflects on the influence and impacts of these technologies at the organisational level in the railway sector. Finally, future potential development based on the previous findings is highlighted to sketch a possible working framework for creating a Virtual Reality Adaptive Learning Tool. Our research, thereby, shows how long-term strategic educational policies can impact the performance of the railway ecosystem.
