Abstract

In various papers we argued that (optical see-through) AR realized with smart glasses will become an everpresent wearable technology. It is against this background that we want to look at what is and what is not experienced by AR users as imperfect, inappropriate, incongruent, improbable, or impossible. All these concepts are related to “presence”, the feeling that we are not just perceiving this augmented world, but that we are part of it, we are inhabitants of the augmented world. Usually, presence research is done in the context of virtual reality. This article surveys some issues to consider in AR presence research. In the various sections we discuss the limitations of AR technology that make us aware that what our senses perceive is not real but fabricated imperfectly, virtual objects (and events in which they are involved) that cannot have a physical representation in the physical world, perception technology that augments, filters, or manipulates human perception capabilities, and, finally, the conscious creation of impossible or improbable situations using AR technology.
