Abstract

In severe cases of acute respiratory distress syndrome, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is one of the ultima ratio therapy options. Using an external circuit similar to a conventional cardio-pulmonary bypass system, blood is pumped through an oxygenator, where additional gas exchange can be provided. However, continuous supervision and control of the machine by a perfusionist can not be maintained in an intensive care unit. The presented control concepts and fault diagnosis schemes point the way to a longterm semi-autonomous safe operation which adapts to patient demand.
