Abstract
In this paper it is proposed that the (multi-)bond graph philosophy in particular is suited as a starting point for the development of computer-based tools for modelling and design of engineering systems. It is discussed that a graphical, non-causal and unambiguous representation of engineering systems is necessary to support modelling and design in an optimal way. This requires a special class of software tools.
