Abstract
Well-designed maps offer insight into spatial patterns and relations among the mapped phenomena, and do this well because they symbolize and abstract the reality represented. Map design is guided by the cartographic visualization process and based on a proper data analysis to make sure the symbology selected matches the perceptual properties of the data. However, the map-maker should also consider the potential users of the map as well as the environment of use.
