The article starts with an introduction to Internet. The characteristics of this new medium are described, with particular attention for the different tools that are currently available. It then sketches some developments with respect to geographic information on 'the net'. This part might be relevant for GIS users, including cartographers. Finally a tentative conclusion is drawn about the impact of Internet on cartography.
