Abstract

This case study presents background and overview for initiatives of the Municipality of Rheden toward achieving the United Nations (UN) Global Goals during the 2018 period. Rheden is one of the first Dutch municipalities to adopt the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Based on learning from Rheden’s engagement with the SDGs, this chapter provides insights about the Global Goals as a catalyst of change for municipal organizations as well as key lessons from Rheden in pioneering the implementation of SDGs. In particular, the adoption of the SDGs has fostered more active cooperation between the municipality, citizens, and private organizations. The integrated approach necessitated by the pursuit of SDGs has resulted in improved quality of service provided by Rheden to its constituents by involving a broad base of stakeholders in processes of solution seeking.
