Abstract

The costs of medical supplies have increased considerably in the past few years. Among these diverse sets of medical supplies hospitals purchase, there is a particularly interesting category, characterized by expensive items, in which physicians have strong preferences. These medical items are known as physician preference items (PPIs). They are expensive medical devices generally used in operating rooms, representing an excellent opportunity to achieve cost savings and value improvements in healthcareHealthcare. Nevertheless, PPIs carry specificities that pose unique challengesChallenges to the procurementProcurement process. This chapter aims to understand the main challenges faced in PPI purchasingPurchasing and to bring to light the complexities surrounding it.
