Abstract
Background: AI-based lifestyle monitoring systems are increasingly explored in long-term care for older adults. While these systems appear promising, insight into interface design requirements from the perspectives of nurses and informal caregivers remains limited. This study aimed to co-design and evaluate interface designs together with nurses and informal caregivers in order to formulate design requirements for AI-based lifestyle monitoring systems in long-term care for older adults.
Methods: A human-centered, iterative design approach was applied, consisting of four phases: (1) a co-design session to develop a shared care scenario and personas, (2) focus groups to explore interface design preferences, (3) the design of interface prototypes, and (4) two iterative rounds of prototype testing. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis using Atlas.ti. Identified preferences were structured into values, attributes, and design requirements.
Results: The findings indicate that interface design for AI-based lifestyle monitoring systems needs to address a broad and interconnected set of requirements. These include clear and intuitive visual presentation, meaningful structuring of information, and well-defined notifications that also provide insight into follow-up actions. In addition, interfaces should accommodate different user roles, be easy to use and be reliable, integrate smoothly with existing care systems, and support caregivers’ own judgment rather than presenting predefined conclusions.
Conclusions: The study resulted in a consolidated set of design requirements addressing visual presentation, level of detail, notifications, user roles, ease of use, reliability, system integration and autonomy.
