Abstract

Mixtures of large and small particles, shaken vertically in a compartmentalized container, show competitive clustering: By tuning the shaking strength, the mixture can be made to cluster in the compartment initially containing most of the large particles (at moderately strong shaking) or in the compartment dominated by small ones (at mild shaking). The video clip shows that the effect is robust enough to work even for candy. Gallery of Fluid Motion Award-winning entry 2003
