Abstract
This chapter explores the consequences of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Human Resource Management (HRM). As digitalization of work develops, a growing number of organisations adopt smart technologies to improve their decision-making and effectiveness. One of the most prominent technologies to do so is AI, referring to machines that can learn and adapt. Many reports, books and papers have been published about this topic, exploring how organisations use AI. Although AI was applied to more routine activities in earlier days, more recent AI systems are used for complex tasks such as the management of personnel. Many such HRM activities are performed through and supported by using AI. However, the effects of these applications are less well-known. Because AI potentially triggers a transformation of HRM, this chapter deals with mapping direct consequences of applying AI in HRM. We provide an organising framework with examples of current research to categorise these various consequences and derive implications for practice and research.
