Abstract

Existing DH systems suffer from major problems like inefficient heat distribution due to losses and lack of controls. However, DH has the potential of being an efficient way of heat supply in comparison with individual gas or oil based heating systems. This kind of situation occurs because heat otherwise wasted from electricity generation units can be applied, and the scale of DH boiler plant allows the efficient utilization of alternative fuels, such as biomass. This chapter discusses the decentralized heat and power production, which is a part of the analysis of environmental impacts. The chapter also reviews the potential of linkages between West European industries and partner industries in Baltic, Central and East European countries. The shifting to indigenous biomass fuels will decrease the dependence from foreign fossil fuel supplies .
