Abstract

The effect of various crown ethers on the transesterification reaction of N-acetyl(L)phenylalanine ethyl ester with propanol catalyzed by α-chymotrypsin was investigated. Crown ethers can strongly enhance this reaction in different organic solvents. A macrocyclic effect is responsible for the increased enzymatic activity. Several possible crown ether enzyme interactions are discussed.
