Abstract

This demo presents a set-up for perception experiments for simulated electroactive textile. This set-up is designed to find the absolute perception threshold of pressure and of indentation on the forearm by a soft, textile, haptic actuator surrounding the arm. Actuation is achieved by placing a ribbon around the arm and pulling on the ribbon with a linear motor. Ribbons can be exchanged easily, different ribbon widths may give different results through mechanisms of spatial summation. Pressure is measured by force on the ribbon divided by the ribbon’s contact area, skin indentation is calculated through the delta in ribbon length around the arm. This set-up can also be used for other perception experiments like JND, comfort threshold or a modified version for spatial resolution.
