title = "Design techniques for energy efficient and low-power systems",
abstract = "Portable systems are being used increasingly. Because these systems are battery powered, reducing energy consumption is vital. In this chapter we give an overview of low-power design and provide a review of techniques to exploit them in the architecture of the system. We focus on: minimising capacitance, avoiding unnecessary and wasteful activity, and reducing voltage and frequency. We review energy reduction techniques with applications in the architecture and design of a hand-held computer including its wireless communication system.",
