    Abstract

This thesis sets out to determine relevant criteria for tools that support engineers in designing production system configurations by automated design. A novel approach is proposed in the form of a software application that enables the production engineers to assess a large variety of system configurations efficiently and effectively. The thesis also describes the intrinsic evaluation of the developed approach, as well as the evaluation by system designers in industry.
