Abstract

Leaks and rupture occurring on USA onshore natural gas gathering pipelines from 1984 to July 2006 are summarized. The leaks and ruptures are summarised by annual cause, pipeline material, pipeline diameter, age of pipe at failure, injuries and fatalities, environment of failure (above ground, under water, etc.), location, class designation and by a calculated ratio of failure pressure to reported MAOP. Analysis is made between total installed pipe and the occurrence of incidents. The database is not complete on all aspects such at the pipeline material or diameter for all incidents but all data available has been included. Where sufficient data was available simple statistical analysis has been included. The value of data bases is shown in their use for pipeline system improvement and the effect of trend implications to pipeline integrity.
