Abstract
Route choice behaviour is one of the important areas for traffic engineering. Especially within Dynamic Traffic Management en Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) route choice is an important element. Many different methods are available for the study of route choice, among which are the observation of route choices on a road network, the usage of a survey or the usage of a route choice simulator. A route choice simulator provides many advantages over the other methods.
In order to study route choice behaviour when providing personal traffic information, during non-recurrent traffic situations, a route choice simulator was developed within knowledge centre AIDA. The basis of the route choice simulator was to be provided by the simulation software Paramics. Another important starting point was the idea of having multiple test persons using the route choice simulator simultaneously.
With the aid of a client-server model and the API provided by Paramics, it was possible to develop a route choice simulator. It can be used for different applications, such as the study of the effects of personal traffic information, but also the study of learning behavior regarding route choice.
