    Abstract

    This chapter reviews our and our colleagues' recent results concerning planar waveguide lasers in $KY(WO_4)_2:Yb^{3+}$ (hereafter abbriviated as KYW:Yb) near 1020 nm and channel waveguide lasers in $\alpha -Al_2O_3:Ti^{3+}$ (hereafter abbriviated as Ti:sapphire) near 800 nm.
