Abstract

Open innovation has been recognized as a critical approach to addressing grand societal challenges. In particular, an ecosystem approach, where interdependent actors jointly create value, is helpful in addressing such complex and uncertain global issues. This systematic literature review focuses on mission-oriented innovation ecosystems in the context of grand societal challenges. Our analysis reveals a number of distinct clusters of research domains, and highlights the role of governance and the interdependence of stakeholders for value creation, as key areas for future research.
