Abstract
The special issue of Computer Networks was based on the findings of the workshop on gossip-based networking, held at the Lorentz Center in The Netherlands in December 2006. The workshop focused on preparing position papers on various significant topics in gossip-based systems. These papers provided significant information about potential research efforts and formed the foundation for a call-for-papers for this special issue. The event revealed that gossip-based protocols had the potential to be used in publish subscribe environments such as RSS-feed systems. It was observed that these networks were suitable for wireless sensor networks in which communication happened through gossiping by nature. The last topic covered by this special issue essentially involved formal verification of protocols.
