Effect of fiber orientation and surface condition on nip-point temperature and interlaminar toughness in LAFP

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

This work presents an experimental procedure to determine the process window for laser assisted fibre placement (LAFP) of a carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic composite. The sample preparation for the mandrel peel test, proposed in this work, presents a more realistic scenario for LAFP. This is achieved by placing the peel tape directly onto an in-situ fibre-placed layer instead of on a press consolidated laminate. The results indicate an increasing variation in measured fracture toughness compared to samples placed on press-consolidated laminates, as well as lower measured nip-point temperatures for similar laser power settings.
