Abstract

In order to improve the mechanical properties of the cermets based on Al2O3 and Ni, Al2O3-TiN powder (Al2O3 powder coated with TiN) with different particle size was mixed with Ni powder. The mixtures were hot pressed to manufacture the cermets. The relative density of the cermets decreases with increasing ceramic content, and a higher density is obtained with finer ceramic particles. The mechanical properties of the cermet with the smaller ceramic particle size (10–20 μm) are better than those with the larger one (40–50 μm). With the same ceramic particle size, the mechanical properties, except hardness, decrease with increasing ceramic content.
