Abstract

Over the past decade, floodings of river floodplains and urbanized areas have become a common feature in many parts of the world due to reasons such as climate and land use changes. It appears that the frequency of flood events has increased but also that the extremeness of the events in terms of magnitude of flow discharges and flood inundation extent increased. By intensified agricultural practices in the relative flat river plains, damages in rural areas have increased while in urban areas damages.
