Efficient modelling of yarn interactions with improved accuracy in over-braiding simulations

Over-braiding is known as a fast automated manufacturing process for preforms used in resin transfer molding. Kinematic simulations of the over-braiding process are useful to predict the fibre distribution for complex mandrel shapes. These simulations currently neglect yarn interactions for arbitrary machine configurations. The current work presents a fast computational approach to simulate multiple interlaced points. This approach was implemented for biaxial braids of 2n yarns, with O(n2) contact points. Typical cases studied demonstrate CPU times of seconds, of course depending on the number of yarns, making the method suited for reinforcement structure design purposes.
