Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyse the main environmental and social impacts of the horticultural greenhouse of tomato production in the literature, with a focus on technology level, as well as the main assessment methodologies. To achieve the target, a systematic literature research was conducted, identifying a reduced number of studies on social impacts assessment, unlike the environmental impacts where a large number of researches were detected. Life Cycle Assessment was the most large used methodology in greenhouse production, which reports the main environmental impacts as follows: consumption of fossil fuels, electricity, fertilizers and greenhouse structure. Several factors involved such as geographical location, technology used and yields affect environmental outcomes. No impact evaluation studies were detected for smart technologies, offering a great opportunity for future research, including environmental, social and performance aspects.
