    Abstract

Compact, multimode fiber-matched 1×2 and 2×2 planar waveguide couplers for fiber-based local area networks (LAN) were fabricated and characterized. Low-cost polymer waveguide technology was employed for fabrication and the design of couplers utilized an extension of the self-imaging principle and waveguide tapering. Results of loss measurement experiments indicated low power imbalance of the couplers.
