    Abstract

Femtosecond writing of refractive-index changes in titanium doped sapphire is demonstrated. Doping the crystal with an appropriate ion (here: Ti3+) reduces the micro-damage threshold of the fabrication process. Channels were written in the bulk of the samples, which exhibit passive and active channel waveguiding.
