Abstract
This chapter explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can both support and undermine Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16), which promotes peace, justice and strong institutions. While AI holds promise for improving governance, transparency and access to justice, it also presents risks such as bias, surveillance and ethical breaches that challenge the rule of law. The chapter emphasises the importance of aligning AI development with human rights, ethical governance and legal accountability. It argues for a multidisciplinary, stakeholder-driven approach to ensure AI reinforces—rather than erodes—the principles underlying SDG 16. The book categorises AI's impact into three areas: Rule of Law, Ethics and Access to Justice, and Criminal Justice. Through expert contributions, it offers legal and policy recommendations to guide AI's responsible use in achieving SDG 16, especially in light of global challenges like COVID-19 and the digital divide in developing countries.
